Nature in your own Backyard - Cabin in the Woods is set on six acres of forest in an unspoiled environment.  Climb up the Mountain to Bird Ridge and you may find some native plants and forest friends such as birds, turtles, frogs or even a newt such as those found at the Cabin this spring.  The Hardwood Forest includes tower oaks, black walnuts and red and white maples, as well as wildflowers and ferns.  There are nesting pairs of Bald Eagles nearby.  Last Spring, a Bald Eagle was sighted flying over the property, most likely following the shad run in the nearby Potomac River.

The Potomac River – The South Branch of the Potomac River two miles from Cabin in the Woods (about 8 minutes).  Peek off the Bridge over the river and the water is so clear that you can see fish resting in the shade.  If you are looking for more adventurous waters, this is a great place to boat and fish. There is easy river access and even an outfitter near Romney which provides tubing excursions. There are numerous State and National Parks nearby

Colonial, Revolutionary, and Civil War History – Hampshire County is the oldest county in West Virginia with the oldest incorporated town, Romney, as the county seat. Originally part of Lord Fairfax's Northern Neck Proprietary, the land was first settled around 1750. Hampshire County and its surrounding area have a rich heritage steeped in Colonial, Revolutionary, and Civil War History. George Washington surveyed the area a young man.  In nearby Ft. Ashby, there is a Colonial Barracks which is the only surviving remnant of a string of forts that were the defense line during the French and Indian War.  The Romney itself changed hands over 50 times during the Civil War due to the areas strategic importance.  A History of Hampshire County is in the Cabin.  Also, there is a Civil War Museum in Romney which has a collection of artifacts and weapons. The Potomac Eagle - The historic Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad is one of America's most beautiful train rides. For three hours enjoy a narrated excursion through a tranquil and pristine mountain valley. View historic farms and lush mountain greenery and a spectacular narrow mountain valley, while above you are high mountain walls and thick forest. Visit http://www.potomaceagle for more details.
